IPC 311: Punishment (Repealed)
Section 311 of IPC has been repealed and has no equivalent in BNS 2023.
What Happened to IPC 311?
Section 311 IPC has no counterpart in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and is repealed. The official comparison of the two Codes lists Section 311 IPC as deleted. The Sanhita contains no offence of being a thug, because the underlying definition in Section 310 IPC was omitted. Conduct involving robbery and murder is now prosecuted under the general provisions on murder, robbery, and criminal conspiracy. Section 111 BNS creates a new offence of organised crime with its own statutory elements and punishments, and is not a replacement for Section 311 IPC.
